Pose of the week- Tortoise Pose

This week, I’ll be discussing ahimsa in my dharma talks, and working our way into tortoise pose. Catch me Wednesdays 10am and Thursdays 8pm @ Area Yoga Myrtle Ave (formerly Lucky Lotus) and Sundays in July 7:30pm on my rooftop (by donation) 🐢🐢🐢 I also offer private classes for individuals and groups! Check out a clip of today’s flow on my Instagram, and check back here for a video of the full sequence so you can practice at home 😎

Cultivate Love

In lieu of a dharma talk this week, I am leading my classes through a loving-kindness meditation. The shooting in Orlando is a culmination of hate. I believe only love can conquer hate. By cultivating love, beginning with self-love, love can emanate to all beings. Love is the only true power, the only true healer. Join me in this mediation, followed by a heart-centered practice, on Wednesday morning at 10am and Thursday evening at 8pm at Area Yoga Forte Greene. If you can’t make it to class, here is a link to a great loving-kindness mediation you can practice at home.

My Daily Dose of Misogyny

A group of construction workers are drilling in front of my doctor’s office and they barked at me as I walked in. Literally barked like dogs. Really helped me relax before having a lighted microscope inserted inside my vagina and having a piece of my cervix cut off and tested for cancer. Men really don’t get it. Almost every time you make it known you see me as a woman, you also make it known you don’t see me as a person.

Be Like the Sun

I treat people the way I want to be treated. When I get mistreated I feel so angry because I know I don’t deserve it, and I know the person who mistreated me didn’t deserve my kindness. But I am reminded that the sun shines whether people appreciate its warmth or not. To not shine would be to not be the sun. I’ll keep choosing to be like the sun. 🌞
Join me for sun-centered sequences in my open-level yoga classes this week: Friday 10 am and Saturday 2:10 pm at Area Yoga Park Slope. Register at areayogabrooklyn.com.

Happy International Women’s Day!

“The world of humanity is possessed of two wings: the male and the female. So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength, the bird will not fly.” -Bahá’í quote
March is women’s history month and I am celebrating the feminine in my yoga and dance classes this month. Much of my yoga practice centers around being both soft and strong, open and steady. I love this Bahá’í quote because it speaks to what feminism is to me- all genders sharing equal power so that we can all experience life freely, as we are meant to experience it. Within each of us we have both male and female energies; we all have both masculine and feminine qualities. Our female “wing” is our soft, open, vulnerable, emotional, cool, nurturing qualities. Our male “wing” is our strong, active, rational, hot qualities. One is not better than the other; both are vital to realizing and expressing our true selves. I have chosen asanas for this week that will bring awareness to the female channel and bring about a greater sense of balance.
